Pediatric Weight Management FAQs

What does Lifestyle Medicine Center specialize in?

Lifestyle Medicine Center in Stamford, CT, specializes in medically supervised weight management for children and teens, led by pediatrician and childhood obesity expert Madhu Mathur, MD, MPH.

How do I know if my child’s weight is a health concern?

Your child’s pediatrician may notice weight gain on the growth chart, or you may see changes in energy, activity, or self-esteem. If you are concerned, a consultation with Dr. Mathur can provide a clear medical evaluation.

What causes childhood obesity?

Childhood obesity usually results from a combination of factors, including genetics, metabolism, eating patterns, physical activity, sleep, stress, and family routines. Dr. Mathur looks for your child’s specific triggers.

What health problems are linked to childhood obesity?

Excess weight in childhood can increase the risk of pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, high cholesterol, dyslipidemia, fatty liver, and other long-term health concerns.

What services do you offer?

We offer medical weight loss, weight loss medication when medically necessary, metabolic testing, nutritional consultation, and body composition analysis.

Is medical weight loss safe for children?

Yes, when supervised by a physician. Our plans use gradual changes and close monitoring to reduce excess fat while supporting healthy growth and development.

Will my child have to follow a strict diet?

No. We focus on gradual, sustainable changes to eating and activity so children do not feel deprived. Plans are built around foods your child enjoys.

Does my child need medication to lose weight?

Most children respond well to improved nutrition and exercise and may not need medication. It is considered only when medically necessary and is always discussed with your family.

What is metabolic testing?

Metabolic testing measures how many calories your child’s body uses at rest and during activity, helping Dr. Mathur set accurate calorie needs and adjust the plan over time.

What is body composition analysis?

Body composition analysis measures the amount of fat compared to lean tissue in your child’s body using painless bioelectrical impedance, showing whether weight loss is coming from fat or muscle.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes. We are accepting new patients. Call (203) 614-8517 or request an appointment online to schedule your child’s first visit.

What should I bring to my child’s first appointment?

Please bring your child’s growth chart, recent lab results, insurance card, a list of current medications, and a referral from your primary doctor if your insurance requires one.

Do I need a referral?

Some insurance plans require a referral from your child’s primary care provider. Even when it is not required, a referral helps us understand your doctor’s concerns.

Do you accept insurance?

Coverage depends on your individual plan. Please contact our office and our staff will help you understand your benefits and any referral requirements.

Do parents need to be involved?

Yes. Parents and caregivers play an important role. Dr. Mathur educates the whole family so healthy habits can be supported at home.

How often will my child need follow-up visits?

Follow-up frequency depends on your child’s individual plan and progress. Regular visits allow Dr. Mathur to monitor results and adjust the plan as your child grows.
